Radio Controlled Helicopters

An Introduction to Radio Controlled Helicopters

There have been huge advances in the field of RC helicopter flying in the last few years. The development of lightweight batteries and micro electronics means that the hobby is more accessible to more people than ever before. From small 2 channel polystyrene toy helis to advanced 6 channel aerobatic flyers the choice and affordability are greater than ever.

RC helicopters from the TWF ESky range make an ideal introduction to flying.

How difficult are Radio Control Helicopters to Fly?

This is the most often asked question before getting started. Its really much the same as riding a bike - at first you think its impossible but once mastered its seems as natural as walking. Initially the helicopter may feel uncontrollable but with gradual practice, simply hovering the helicopter at first, you will gain confidence and skill.

For initial flights its best to use a training kit and hover with the helicoper facing away from you

Getting started

If you're serious about pursuing rc helicopters as a hobby then don't start with anything less than a 4 channel heli. 2 and 3 channel helis are really just toys and will not give you a real idea of what its like to fly more sophisticated machines. The 4 channel set up will be essentially the same whether its a small fixed pitch heli like the ESKY Honey Bee or a larger machine such as the Gaui 550.

GAUI 550

Electric helicopters such as the GAUI 550 are built to very high specification.

Gas or Electric - Nitro or LiPo Power?

Such are the developments of lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries and highly efficient brushless electric motors that there a few advantages in flying fuel (nitro) powered machines - especially for the beginner. The electic powered radio controlled helicopters offer clean, easy and convenient operation - whereas a fuel power heli requires a greater amount of 'kit' to get started and maintain. Noise levels are also much lower for electric helicopters, allowing their use in many more locations including suburban back gardens.

Even tiny, lightweight lithium batteries can pack a mighty punch
